The Subs Will Roll On

Silver Mine Subs in Lafayette must use the front door for all deliveries after 10:00 PM and the city will only consider violations ruled on by a judge as fodder for shutting them down in the future.

Bravo to the Lafayette Planning Commission in Lafayette for placing a defensible policy made up of metrics and logic around this land use issue.

That this arrangement had to become an agenda item instead of a face-to-face conversation with neighbors and staff shows there was a mixture of indifference and intolerance on both sides. This resolution should be a message to other businesses to be aware of their neighbors' concerns. It also raised awareness of nontraditional services and their worthwhile place in town - the fact that Silver Mine frequently serves emergency responders up late highlights a part of the town's activities most people don't think about.

Good solution. And, you're right, too bad it had to become an agenda item.

If I owned SM I'd be reaching out to my neighbors in some way to show good faith, and to open a dialogue so future issues don't get blown out of proportion.

I think you guys miss a big point. The staff recommendation should have proposed the agreed upon solution. The PC would still have had to agree to it. A ten minute tour of the site made the solution obvious.

Threatening to put untenable conditions on a small business owner providing a value service to the community was not the right way in any way shape or form.

The big point is the outcome. An outcome that should work for everyone is a winning outcome.

Using this issue as an example of how poorly the city does it's day to day job may have merit, (and I think it does), but it's not the big point of this issue.

DB,

It is not the direct point of the issue, but it is indeed a big point. I rolled by eyes when Councilor Bensman brought up replacing the city manager, but the more I look I realize he has a very good point.

The funny thing about the staff's recommendatioin is that it was not a solution at all. Who decided that the neighbors didn't need to sleep before midnight?

This issue would have no doubt become a lightening rod had common sense not prevailed. Kudos to the PC. I’d say the ball is in SM’s court.
